A predawn multiple vehicles accident on Lagos - Ibadan expressway on Friday has left 18 people burnt and blackened beyond recognition when a truck believed to be on the fleet of Dangote haulage vehicles had a head on collision with passenger bus.
The Dangote truck which was said to have violated traffic route, recklessly drove against traffic and collided with in - bound Lagos Mazda bus conveying people. The impact of the collision, The Daily Crucible learnt, touched - off fire outbreak that engulfed the victims.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) were sighted evacuating the victims, clearing obstructions and redirecting traffic.
The Spokesperson of the TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said it occurred at the early hours of today about few metres away from Isara bridge along Lagos - Ibadan expressway.
He said 18 people died in the accident and attributed the cause to traffic route violation.
"According to eye witness account, the Dangote Howo tanker, whose content cannot be ascertained, drove in a direction prohibited by law, route violation, and in the process had a head-on collision with a commercial bus, which was driving on its rightful lane.
"How the fire engulfed the whole scene cannot be ascertained, because it can't be confirmed if the tanker was laden with fuel, even though the impact of the collision could have resulted into the inferno, more so with the likelihood of either of the vehicles having petrol in kegs.
"No doubt it is catastrophic and heart wrenching incidenct which calls to question our attitude/disposition as road users towards safety.
"While TRACE Corps commiserate with the family of the deceased families, articulated vehicle drivers are again warned against route violation In view of its attendant consequences."
