Boundaries Encroachment Causing Tension Among Border Communities In South West - Governors

From Ayobami Ife, Abeokuta

The six Southwest States have identified cases of incursion, encroachment and replacement of beacons as issues that had led to tension among border communities in the region.

The Southwest States - Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti, also noted that ambiguities in the description of legal notices on boundaries contribute to non - resolution of boundary matters.

These were parts of the communique issued at the conclusion of a two - day interactive session of the National Boundary Commission with the six States' boundary committees (Southwest zone) in Abeokuta, the State capital, at the weekend.

In attendance at the event were the Director - General of the National Boundary Commission, Surv. Adamu Adaji, governor Dapo Abiodun, Deputy governor Noimot Salako - Oyedele(host),  Deputy governor Lucky Orimisan(Ondo), Commissioner for Land, Nathaniel Agunbiade(Osun), Deputy governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, Deputy governor Rauf Olaniyan(Oyo) and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Wale Ahmed, (Lagos).

They acknowledged that non resolution of boundary matters hurts border communities in yoruba land.

According to them, there is need for proper funding of state boundary committees for effective boundary definition and management.

They also recommended among other things that the principle of 'give and take' should be adopted by the Southwest States towards permanent resolution of disputed boundaries.
