Strike: Again, Court Asks ASUU To Resume Work Immediately

Again, a competent court has ordered striking lecturers of the nation's public universities to return to classrooms immediately.

An Appeal sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday ordered members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their eight-month-old strike and return to the classrooms forthwith.

The appellate court gave the order in a ruling on an application by the striking lecturers seeking permission for it to appeal against the order of the National Industrial Court which earlier directed the striking lecturers to resume duty.

The 3-man panel led by Justice Hamman Barka, stated that calling off the strike is the only condition that the union’s request to appeal the ruling of the National Industrial Court which ordered the union to call off its strike will be given an effect.

It, however, struck out the application by ASUU for a stay of execution of the order of the Industrial Court, based on the motion by the applicant’s counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), for the withdrawal of the application.

Reading the lead ruling, the Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, ordered ASUU to file its notice of appeal on the ruling of the lower court within seven days.
