A sociocultural organisation, Southern Peoples Congress(SPC), has condemned the latest kidnapping of secondary school children in Zamfara state by bandits, fearing that abduction is fast becoming a more frequent occurrence.
SPC described it as a very shameful and totally unacceptable matter and gave the State governor, Bello Matawalle, a - 14 - day ultimatum to retrieve the abducted school children.
The group wondered why in this trying times security had yet not been beefed up around all secondary schools across the country.
Gunmen in their numbers had on Wednesday morning attacked Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, Maradun Local Government Area (LGA) and went away with 73 students.
The abduction followed the invasion of the school by a large number of armed bandits at exactly 11: 22 hours.
The Zamfara Police Command confirmed the kidnapping through the Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammed Shehu, who is the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO).
Also, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Ayuba N Elkanah, had since deployed a search and rescue team with a mandate to work in synergy with the military to ensure the safe rescue of the 73 students.
But reacting to the incident, the Southern Peoples Congress said it was more appalling to know that the ugly incident took place at the Governor's hometown.
The group's National Director. Media & Communication, Hon. George Wilson, stated this on Wednesday in a statement made available to newsmen.
George wondered bandits could once again kidnapped students of Government Day Secondary School, Maya in Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State given previous experiences.
"We the Southern Peoples Congress in strong terms condemn this unholy and wicked act, however we advise the bandits to with immediate effect release the the students unconditionally, as we also give the state Governor 14 days to relentlessly despatch search team to look for all the said abducted students and hand over them back to their families.
"More so, the state police should as a matter of urgency intensify security around all the secondary schools in the state to avoid further kidnapping of armless students," George stated.
