The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has given insight into why the loot recovered from former governor of Delta State, James Onanefe Ibori, will go to the federal government coffer and not that of the Delta State where money was allegedly looted.

Malami said the federal government is the victim of the offshore movement of the loot and not Delta state, a sub - nationality.

He disclosed this during his Tuesday appearance on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today.

According to him, the money won't be returned to Delta State Government, where it was pilfered.

The Attorney General had, earlier on Tuesday with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, disclosed the return of £4.2 million retrieved from Mr. Ibori and friends.

The money is expected to arrive Nigeria in about two weeks from now and it is equally  expected to be used to fund three federal projects - the second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kano road, and Lagos-Ibadan Express way.

Malami noted that the law that was allegedly  breached by Ibori was a federal law and that the parties of interests involved in the repatriation of the funds were also national and not sub-national governments.

“The major consideration relating to who is entitled to a fraction or perhaps the money in its entirety is a function of law and international diplomacy.

“All the processes associated with the recovery were consummated by the federal government and the federal government is, indeed, the victim of crime and not sub-national,” he said.
