Meet The New Defence Chief, Leo Irabor, Others




 The  new defence chief, Major General
 Lucky Irabor, hails from Agbor in Delta State and is of Ika ethnic group. He has experience in the Lake Chad Basin, where he was stationed as a young officer. He has also served in the Nigerian contribution to the joint UN/African Union peacekeeping mission to Darfur (UNAMID) and is the former commander of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State. 

He was in Alamala, Abeokuta as an Examination President in early October last year when a total of 62 Captains drawn from the 81 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), converged at 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamara, Ogun State, for practical exercise and  examinations aimed at assessing their "competence" in deploying tactical skills among others in all spheres of war.

The weeklong exercise which was
preparatory to the officers' promotion from Captains to Majors upon successful completion,  revolved around  map reading, tactics and low intensity conflict, communications, french language and staff duties at different stages.

The Daily Crucible recalled that Major  General Lucky Irabor hammered it in that the candidates performance would determine their growth in NA, adding that the exercise sought to assess and prepare junior officers towards attainment of staff course while improving their knowledge and standard in the military profession.

Major General Irabor also pointed it out to the candidates that their fate in respect of  the Captain to Major Practical Examination  2020 (CMPPE 2020) depended on them, warning that success in it won't come through "fraudulent means" but by "competence and integrity."

According to Irabor who recalled at the time that he passed through the same exercise in 1992, assured that neither him nor any member of the examination panel was in Ogun State for the purpose of failing anybody.

Further information revealed that Major General Lucky  Irabor was the Chief of Defence, Training and Operations at the Defence Headquarters, Armed Forces of Nigeria. He is an Alumnus of the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College Ghana, the National Defence College Bangladesh and Harvard Kennedy School of Government Executive Programme, USA. Major General Lucky Irabor is a trained Engineer from Obafemi Awolowo University and holds two Masters Degrees from the University of Ghana, Accra, and Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dhaka.

As the CDTOPs, he oversees training and operations in the Armed Forces of Nigeria under the direction of the Chief of Defence Staff. Specifically, he undertakes periodic reviews of a broad range of policies and activities relating to training and operations in the Armed forces. In addition to his schedules, he is the Chairman of the AFN Committee on COVID-19. The Committee is working to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease in the establishments of the Armed forces in line with Nigeria Centre for Disease Control protocols. The Committee is also giving support to the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 including the deployment of Medical Personnel across the country to boost the available manpower in the management of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria. 

The General was formerly the Theatre Commander of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE, North-East Nigeria as well as Force Commander Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin Area. The operations focused on Counter Terrorism/ Counterinsurgency. 
He is a distinguished awardee of several militaries, ECOMOG and United Nations Awards and Medals. The senior officer is widely travelled
1. He served as Commander, Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army, TRADOC, Minna.
2. Major General Irabor also served as Chief of Training and Operations, Defence headquarters.
3. Served as Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE.
4. He hails from the vicinity of Agbor in Delta State
5. He was a member of the RC 34.
6He once served as Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff.
7. Was head of the Multi-National Joint Task Force as its Field. Commander.
8. He’s a trained engineer.
