Henceforth, harsh fate consistent with the provisions of the law awaits perpetrators of violence against women, girls and children in Ogun state because of a newly signed law - Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP LAW) of the State 2018, that is  in place.

The State's Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Abiola Kufile-Okonji, said the new law would help protect women and girls from violence and also provides accessible services to survivors.

Mrs Kufile Okonji made this known at stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital,  during the unveiling of the simplified version of the VAPP LAW and commemoration of 16 Day Activism on Elimination of Gender Based Violence Against Women and Girl Child.

The Commissioner was represented by the Director of Child Development in the Ministry, Mr. Kehinde Egbeolowo.

The event  was organised by the United Nation Population Fund (UNPF) and Women Advocate and Research Documentation Centre (WARDC).

She noted that Ogun State had strengthened its policies and programmes to effectively tackle the menace, and called on other stakeholders to be more committed to the crusade against violence.

According to her, people should leverage on the law in place and consistent with the United Nations theme for this year’s celebration, “Orange The World #Hear Me Too” hand step up measures to protect women, girls and children from violence.

The Commissioner advised individuals and families of abused persons to report to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Non-Governmental Organisations involved in protecting victims of violence.

Also, the representative of WARDC, Mrs. Emmanuela Azu, lauded the state government for the VAPP LAW and advised that a coordinated network of all stakeholders should be put in place too in the struggle for a society free of violence.

Mrs Azu said this could be achieved through more advocacy, sexual education and economic empowerment.
