Suspected hoodlums have set an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Iyana Mortuary, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital one fire.
The hoodlums, numbering about eight attacked the facility around midnight on Thursday.
The arsonists scaled the perimeter fence to gain entry to the premises before setting the INEC building ablaze.
They were said to have soaked loaves of bread with petrol and threw them into the building at different locations to light up the INEC office.
It was learnt that a night guard at the facility, Azeez Hamzat, made distress calls to the police and Federal Fire Service around 1:am, informing them that the facility was on fire.
It was gathered that the store, the Registration Area Officer's office, the conference room and non-sensitive materials were affected by the fire.
The Ogun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye, described the incident as shocking.
“Our office was set on fire. The police are investigating. I do not know what to say. I'm in shock myself. We called the police and other security agencies at night. The fire brigade put the situation under control. The level of damage is still being assessed.
“It is very shocking and untoward. The security agencies are doing their very best. We are meeting again later today to come up with other strategies,” Ijalaye said.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, could not confirm it but said he would find out from the nearest police division about the fire incident.
