Critical stakeholders of the Ogun State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday urged the Independent National Electoral Commssion, INEC, in the state to urgently embark on speedy reproduction of the 65,699 permanent voter cards, PVCs allegedly destroyed in the Thursday attack by arsonists on the Iyana-Mortuary office of the commission.
The 65,699 PVCs were destroyed when the yet - to - be identified and apprehended arsonists set the INEC facility on fire.
The PDP Stàkeholders Forum in a statement issued at the end of its meeting in Abeokuta South Local Government at its secretariat, in Ago-Egun, Abeokuta, expressed shock that it was no coincidence that the said PVCs were burnt just three days to the slated date of distribution, which was expected to begin this Saturday, 12th of November.
The forum called on security agencies to ensure perpetrators were brought to book.
Members of the forum which include Alhaji Isiaka Amodemaja, former State Secretary of the party; Alhaji Semiu Sodipo, former State lawmaker; Hon Fasiu Bakene, Alhaji Odejinmi Ismail, Bar. Folake Martins, Alhaji Mukaila Adekunle, Hon Kamaar Sodipo, House of Representatives candidate of the party for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency; Chief Toyin Amuzu, Hon Olajide Atobatele and Hon Idowu Olowofuja unanimously warned that nobody should be disenfranchised from participating in the 2023 elections based on the fire incident.
The forum condemned the attack in its entirety, noting that it was suspicious that the arsonists actually targeted the strong rooms where vital election materials and PVCs were kept, wondering who could be afraid of having a free and fair election.
In it's words, the forum said, "those afraid of a free and fair elections should by now have realised that their games are up, as the will of God, which is the will of the people would prevail. If they have done so well, why are they afraid? They have used selfish individuals to disrupt other parties, now they have resorted to attacking the electoral umpire, but no amount of intimidation will save them. They should just start packing their bags and baggages come 2023" .
The forum also observed that "the resurgence of arson targeted at public institutions, especially those critical to the successful conduct of the 2023 general elections has raised fears of a volatile electioneering season as the country begins its countdown to the polls, thus security agencies must rise up to forestall such occurrences and put the mind of electorates at rest.
While requesting security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and arrest perpetrators of the dastardly act , the PDP Stakeholders forum called on parents to warn their young ones from getting involved in political thuggery and violence, as the people will reject any form of intimidation in their quest for change.
