Ogun State based two media organisations - Salient Times and The State Post, have listed 13 teachers from public primary and secondary schools in the state for recognition and celebration on October 5, the World Teacher Day.

The teachers who were identified and screened by officials of the State's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, will be given various prizes in recognition of not just their Noble profession, but also to motivate them for their willingness and commitment to  practice in rural areas despite the enticing opportunities in the cities.

Addressing newsmen at Olusegun
Osoba Press Centre, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital, to unveil the  maiden edition of 'Celebration of Teachers in Core rural areas,' Mr. Abiodun Taiwo; the publisher of Salient Times, an online news medium, said the 13 awardees would be formally made known to the public on October 5 as they file out to receive their awards on that particular day set aside to celebrate teachers worldwide.

Explaining the rationale behind the novel idea, Mr. Taiwo said the programme seeks to promote good quality education in Ogun rural areas, arrest rural - urban drift and accord honour to teachers who readily accept posting to schools in rural communities without complaint as well as encourage hard work among them.

He lauded the state government and the  Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Adelaja Arigbabu for expressly approving this noble idea about celebrating public school teachers in rural places of the state.

The Salient Times publisher also commended other critical partners, who welcomed the initiative and had also thrown their weight behind it.

He said, "We believe that improved rural education is one possible strategy for keeping them in rural areas. We believe that quality education is a pertinent tool for enhancing the quality of life, creating awareness and capability, increasing freedom, and improving overall holistic human development for the people and the nation.

"We are convinced that a well-supported, easily accessible education system is an efficient means to make people economically conscious, and thereby, make them actively participate in their economic prosperity and cultural development.

"We, therefore, agreed that rural Teachers must be motivated and encouraged.

"We have also  seen how His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun is giving priority attention to delivering the dividends of democracy through quality education to the people of the state because he believes that the best way to fight poverty is to empower people through quality education.

"The innovative and impactful ideas Governor Abiodun brought to bear in the education sector are what we at Salient Times and The StatePost saw that made us harness our resources and contact well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders to motivate our teachers in the rural areas.

"In line with the advice of our principal collaborators on this programme, we are giving cash prizes to the star winner, and twelve others. We have selected Six individuals from Primary Schools and Six from Secondary Schools also."

"On October  5 which marks the day set aside for the celebrations of Teachers all over the world, we have decided to celebrate our Teachers in rural areas by giving out some cash gifts and valuables to motivate them to do more."
