13 die, 19 injured In Auto Crash On Christmas Day In Ogun

Two separate accidents on Christmas Day have left a total of 13 travellers dead and 19 others with varying degrees of injury.

The first accident which involved a Mercedes Benz MarcoPolo bus led to the death of seven persons and injuries to seven others while 49 people came out unscathed

The crash occurred at about 12:20am atop the accident endemic Ososa dual carriage bridge, Odogbolu (Ogun State) along Lagos - Ore expressway and involved a luxury bus on the fleet of Izu Chukwu Motors.

The bus which took off from its station in Ojuelegba, Lagos, around 11pm on Christmas Eve, carried 63 passengers - Southeasterners - comprising 40 male adult, 15 female adult, 05 male children and 03 female children - all travelling for the yuletide before a cruel fate showed up  on Ososa dual carriage bridge at 12:20am.

The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) 
Superintendent Route Commander (SRC) and FRSC Public Education Officer for the Sector Commander of Ogun Sector Command, FRSC, Florence Okpe, disclosed this on Saturday morning on behalf of the Sector Commander for Ogun Sector Command, Ahmed Umar.

SRC Okpe who attributed the cause of the lone accident to "wrongful overtaking  and loss of control," explained that the injured  were given first aid treatment while those that died were deposited at State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu Ode. 

She said: "Seven (07) persons sustained injuries (03 Male adult and 04 female adult). A total of 07 persons were recorded death from the crash ( 03 Male adult and 04 female adult), 49 persons were recorded unhurt (34 male adult, 07 female adult, 05 male children and 03 female children) 

"Nigeria Police Force  MTD from Odogbolu were contacted and the crashed vehicle was  handed over to the police and obstruction cleared off the road .

The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector Command caution motorists on dangerous driving especially this period of high vehicular movement and  night travel  when visibility is poor.

"He advised motorists to drive defensively, maintain safe speed avoid night travels  and obey traffic rules and regulations.

"The Sector Commander commiserated with the family of the crash victims and enjoined them to contact FRSC Ijebu-Ode Unit Command for more information about the crash."

In the same vein and barely two hours after the first crash that claimed seven lives, another accident on Christmas Day  on Ogun State stretch of Lagos - Ibadan expressway also left six persons dead and 12 other people with injuries.

The second auto crash occurred on the long Kara bridge of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, opposite Elanlan Construction zone at about 03:20am.

Two vehicles marked  MKA567XZ,  a Toyota Hiace bus and an Iveco trailer with registration number XF854KTN were involved.

A total of 18 persons were rescued comprising 12 injured persons and six dead bodies, according to the Superintendent Route Commander (SRC) and FRSC Public Education Officer for the Sector Commander of Ogun Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Florence Okpe.

SRC Okpe attributed the causes to road obstruction, excessive speed and loss of control.

She noted that the injured were taken to different hospitals  - Lagos State Accident and  Emergency  Ojota, Divine Touch Hospital, Ibafo, (Ogun State)  and Olabisi Onobanjo University Teaching Hospital(OOUTH), Sagamu while the dead were deposited at Idera Mortuary, Sagamu.

According to Okpe, the sum of one hundred and twenty seven  thousand thousand and nine hundred naira (N127,900) was recovered from the accident scene.

She quoted the Sector Commander FRSC, Ogun Sector Command, Ahmed Umar as advising motorists to drive cautiously and contact FRSC Ibafo outpost for more information about the crash.
