In its commitment to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents of Ogun State , the State government has put a temporary stop to the sale of industrial gas in the State, as a result of recent multiple gas explosion.

In the last two weeks, Abeokuta, the State capital, has recorded many cases of gas explosion and no fewer seven persons, including a 300level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, have died in the process while  others were gravely injured.

Earlier on Friday, another gas explosion rocked a construction yard  at the Onikoko area of the State capital in less than 24 hours after a similar one occurred  within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library(OOPL), also in Abeokuta.

The two persons seriously injured when an idle cylinder, though with gas inside, suddenly exploded, injuring the two within close range and they had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

Also, buildings along the Onikoko-Adigbe road and nearby vehicles were not spared as they experienced some dents.

A  teacher at St. Louis College, Abeokuta, was also to be affected by the explosion, promoting officials of the Ogun State Government, including the State Commissioner for Special Duties, Barr. Femi Ogunbanwo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Kehinde Onasanya, to visit the scene.

Responding to the phenomenon, the Government had to put a halt temporary to the sales of indusi gas in the State.

This was made known by the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Barr. Femi Ogunbanwo during a stakeholders meeting in Abeokuta, in order to find lasting solution to the problem.

Ogunbanwo noted that all major stakeholders in the gas sector were expected to abide by the directives, saying, "Anyone found guilty of selling adulterated gas products or violating safety protocols would have full weight of the law to contend with".

He reiterated that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun had been in consultations with the federal authorities, charging relevant agencies of government and the Nigerian Police to move round the nooks and crannies of the State, investigate and bring to book whoever found culpable of any sharp practices or negligence that could cause further occurrence.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya described the incidence as an ugly development, which must be nipped in the bud.

Earlier, a team consisting Barr. Femi Ogunbanwo, Mr. Ola Oresanya, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Engr. Rasaki Ojetola and other government officials had visited different sites of the explosion and some gas plant outlets, which necessitated the seal of two of the plants in Omida and Idi-Ori in Abeokuta metropolis.
