Staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) have sworn to an oath, committing themselves not to leak or divulge official documents and information.
The oaths were administered on Tuesday in pursuant of the Official Secrets Act and in line with the newly adopted Document Classification Policy of the EFCC.
The Official Secrets Act makes it unlawful or prohibitive for any person to obtain, reproduce or retain any classified document which he is not authorised on behalf of the government to obtain.
The consequence of such act if discovered, may be guilty of an offence and liable to conviction.
In a statement titled, ‘EFCC Staff Take Fresh Oath of Allegiance’ by its Spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, he stated that the staff pledged to perform their duties diligently.
“As part of ongoing reform efforts to improve efficient delivery of its mandate, officials of the EFCC today May 18, 2021 took fresh official oaths, pledging among others, to perform their duties diligently and honestly.
“The Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, led other categories of staff to take the oath in compliance with the Official Secrets Act and the newly adopted Document Classification Policy of the commission,” the statement reads.
But some Nigerians are kicking against it on social media, alleging that with the presence of some unpatrotic persons and bad eggs in the EFCC, the Oath may serve as canopy for unchallenged illegal harassment and arrest of suspects, particularly youths, without any warrant.
