Unspecified numbers of people believed to be bandits have attacked the convoy of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
The noon time attack on Saturday by the suspected bandits happened around Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road, The Daily Crucible learnt.
The Governor was on his way to Makurdi when the attackers opened fire on his convoy but the security personnel attached to him repelled them.
In recent times, Benue State has witness a surfeit of attacks by suspected bamdits despite raid on one of their suspected camps in December by soldiers.
In January this year, bandits attacked and killed a Livestock Guard and shot an official of the Agro Rangers, a unit in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Makurdi, the state capital.
The bandits attacked and killed the Livestock guards, shot the ranger at Mbalagh Council ward, behind NASME Barracks when they were returning from patrol in Mbalagh Council ward of Makurdi local government area.
The Daily Crucible recalls that the Defence Headquarters had on December 16 conducted a dawn raid conducted on the criminals’ location at Adangbe Village in Mbacher Council Ward of the Local Government Area using troops of Operation Whirl Stroke .
The hideout of some of late Gana’s militia gang members in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue was stormed, leading to the killing two in the process.
The operation was meant to forestall banditry and other criminal activities in the North-central zone of the country.
Three locally made rifles, 21 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition as well as other items including a motorcycle were recovered by the troops during the encounter.
