From Ayobami Ife, Abeokuta
Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the then President Olusegun Obasanjo has apologized to the Igbos in Nigeria for his Saturday post, hinting that a President of an Igbo extraction is not feasible in 2023 until the north forgives them of the sin of killing its leader and Sarduna of Sokoto, Sir
Ahmadu Ibrahim Bello, who was assassinated during the January 15 military coup. The Prime Minister, Alh. Abubakar Tafa Balewa was also cut down during that bloody episode.
The Daily Crucible in its report yesterday, quoted Okupe as stating that "a national consensus for Igbo Presidency cannot evolve until the core north forgives the Igbos for the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto by nigerian soldiers of Igbo extraction in the 1966 Coup.
"This is the political Knot only the Igbo leaders must spearhead and with the support of other well meaning Nigerians, resolve with a high level of humility and political dexterity."
But the perceived offensive post stirred criticisms hours later, forcing the medical doctor - turned politician to backtrack, offering unreserved apology to the Igbos and other Nigerians who felt offended by his post on Igbo presidency and the north.
"OPEN APPOLOGY TO THE IGBOS.
I tender my unreserved appology 2 d Igbos & other nigerians who felt offended by my post on igbo presidency and the north.I never intended to hurt or demean the Igbos.Instead I wanted 2 help actualise d dream. I regret d said post, & I am truly sorry," Okupe stated on his twitter account page.
