A state legislator, Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, representing Obowo State constituency in Imo State House of Assembly is worried that marriageble women of Imo extraction have continued to remain single almost interminably following the prohibitive bride price slammed on their heads by parents and their respective villages.

Hon. Ibeh is seeking to upturn the practice through legislation and thus lessen the hitherto weighty bride price burden on prospective groom/suitors.

This also seek to set these women free from being tied down to their parents' home or elsewhere indefinitely.

The lawmaker has sponsored a bill to regulate the outrageous cost of customary marriages in the State.

He presented the bill for the second reading on Wednesday, this week, during plenary, expressing the worry over the  pervasive practice in Imo State and Southeast States.

The bill is expected to crash the current outrageous bride price which varies from community to community and family to family in Igboland.

If the bill sails through and is passed into law asvwell as accented to by the Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, no customary marriage in the state shall exceed the sum of N180,000, excluding the bride price which shall also not exceed N80,000.
