The immediate past General Manager of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Katsina, Ayinde Soaga on has called on Nigerian journalists to wrest social media space from charlatans and impostors using the platforms to purvey fake news and misinformation.
Soaga, a veteran broadcast journalist, warned that should professionals yield the social media space to quacks to dominate, more harms would be inflicted on the profession and the Society.
The former General Manager of Gateway Television during the administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun in Ogun state, spoke in Abeokuta at the memorial lecture of former General Manager of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC), Diji Akinhanmi.
Speaking on the topic, "Journalism in an era of misinformation," Soaga lamented that quacks have hijacked social media platforms to serve the public half - baked, unverified and fake news to the detriment of the society and journalism.
He urged professionals to seize the space with ethically oriented reports in order to stem the tide of misinformation.
He said: "So, what should be done? The journalists, who are professionals must take that (social media) space. We must not leave social media space to charlatans and those who do not know. And then, pass information that is well researched, verified and of truth.
