NCDC : Tough Time Looms As Nigerians Disregard COVID -19 Protocols

...As Nigeria Records 749 New Cases

From Jane  Okafor,  Abuja

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has raised the alarm that January 2021 will be tough for Nigerians with likely spike  in new cases of covid-19, given the manner people have been conducting themselves during the yuletide and holiday period in total  disregard of the laid down protocols concerning social gathering.

As of 11pm on Tuesday, Nigeria recorded 749 new cases of COVID19 with Lagos maintaining its epicentre status for the virus infection( Lagos-299), followed by Plateau-131, Kaduna-83 FCT-74 and  Kwara-35.

Also, there are 85,560 confirmed cases, 71,937 discharged cases and 1,267 deaths as of Tuesday night.

NCDC identified last week as the worst week ever since the beginning of the pandemic February  27, 2020 as the  country records more cases.

The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this during the Presidential Task Force briefing on covid-19 briefing on Tuesday in Abuja.

Chikwe urged Nigerians to brace up for the consequences of their actions as seen in crowded event centres and social facilities that made mockery of social distancing and safety protocols.

He said, “We have just faced the worst week since we started responding to this outbreak. We had more cases in Nigeria last week than in any other previous week since the beginning of the outbreak.

“Just looking at pictures, images and videos from across the country is a very disheartening situation because it appears that our messaging and our appeals to Nigerians over the last few months have not been heeded, and we have gone ahead with business as usual. Event centres, social facilities are full; so it is no surprise that cases are rising.

“January will be a tough month no doubt about it. So we have to brace ourselves for the consequences of the activities that we have decided to carry out in December.”

749 new cases of #COVID19Nigeria and the affected states. Lagos-299 Plateau-131 Kaduna-83 FCT-74 Kwara-35 Sokoto-26 Edo-18 Kano-17 Katsina-16 Delta-11 Nasarawa-10 Ondo-9 Bauchi-9 Rivers-5 Akwa Ibom-3 Jigawa-1 Osun-1 Ekiti-1
