Donald Trump, President of the United States, has celebrated the successful rescue operation of an American citizen held hostage in Northern Nigeria.
The American was said to have been abducted in Niger Republic on Tuesday by gunmen and subsequently moved to Nigeria
But the U.S Special forces in a predawn operation, freed the citizen from bondage safely and killing the abductors - six of them.
In his tweet this on Saturday afternoon, Trump described the operation as a “big win” for the U.S special forces.
U.S Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo had earlier announced the rescue operation, saying the United States is committed to the safe return of all U.S. citizens taken captive.
“We delivered on that commitment late last night in Nigeria, where some of our bravest and most skilled warriors rescued a U.S. citizen after a group of armed men took him hostage across the border in Niger.
“Thanks to the extraordinary courage and capabilities of our military, the support of our intelligence professionals, and our diplomatic efforts, the hostage will be reunited with his family.
“We will never abandon any American taken hostage,” Pompeo wrote in a terse statement.
