Resumed Hearing at the House Committee on Niger Delta came to abrupt end on Monday when Kemebradikumo Pondei, Acting managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) collapsed while being grilled by the House of Representatives committee probing the Commission.

Pondei who only last week told the Committee how among other things, the Commission spent over N1bn as COVID - 19 palliative for staff, suddenly caved in while being questioned over alleged prodigal spending by the commission and passed out afterwards, forcing officials to revive him.

The House is probing the N81.5bn allegedly spent by the  NDDC under Pondei's watch in less than six months.

He appointed MD in Acting capacity in February but the Commission allegedly spent the said N81.5b, including N1.5bn as palliative for themselves amid COVID - 19 pandemic, less than six months in office.

The  House Committee on Niger Delta which  was demanding explanation from him on the expenses, quickly suspended its hearing following Pondei's health emergency and pending when he  would regain his strength to stand further grilling.

However,  Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has said that Kemebradikumo Pondei will not appear before the committee again given his health challenge in the morning during investigation.

Gbajabiamila made this known at the resumption of the session following the adjournment necessitated by the collapse of Mr. Pondei.

The Speaker noted that the committee will adopt the written response of Pondei.

Gbajabiamila spoke while fielding questions after the NDDC boss collapsed and rushed out for medical attention

“There would be no need for the MD of NDDC to appear anymore since he has submitted a written response.

“I wish Mr. Pondei safe and speedy recovery and I have also sent the Medical Director of the National Assembly to follow up to ascertain the condition of the MD. Thank you very much and I, therefore, hand over to the current chairman of the Committee, Mr. Thomas Ereyitomi to continue with the hearing.”
