President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday heartily congratulated Kamarudeen Usman on the successful defence of his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title with an emphatic win over Jorge Masvidal.
Kamaru Usman retains his UFC Welterweight title in Dubai after defeating Jorge Masvidal 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 on Sunday morning in a fiercely contested fight.
While Usman won the first two rounds, Masvidal took the third and at the end, the judges in unison, deemed the Auchi, Edo State, born fighter winner of the fight.
Kamaru remained undefeated in his category.
Reacting to Kamaru's victory, Buhari noted that as the first African-born and Nigerian UFC Champion, Buhari commends the courageous fighter for finishing strong inside the octagon, proudly flying the green and white colours in distant lands.
The President noted that Kamaru's feat reminded the world that good things and great people come out of Nigeria.
The President added that while the global COVID-19 pandemic may have brought gloom to many families and nations, he remained delighted and gratified that the nation's welterweight champion has lifted Nigerians' spirits with another professional performance.
"This is a prove that things will surely get better at the fullness of time when we remain committed to our vision," Buhari said, according to Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity).
President Buhari, therefore, wished Usman the very best and more victories in his career and prays that like fine wine, he improves with age.
