Onchocerciais is an eye and skin disease caused by a worm infestation called Onchocerca volvulus. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of a blackfly which breed in fast-flowing streams and rivers and predictably increasing the risk of blindness to individuals living nearby river or stream from where the disease derives its common name as "River blindness."
The Daily Crucible gathered that there are eight onchocerciasis-endemic local government areas (LGAs) in the State and the eight are Odeda, Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Imeko - Afon, Ewekoro, Ifo, Obafemi-Owode and Yewa because of the Ogun - Oshun river systems that course through many of the Communities within these affected LGAs.
And their rocky substratum and vegetations too make the area suitable for breeding of the vector rapidly.
Field workers, ostensibly agents of UNICEF and SFH, were sighted in Abeokuta South Local Government Area going from place to place carrying out Mass Drugs Administration (MDA) to people.
Temitope Musebiu, Health Facilitator for Okelewo coverage area for the programme, said the weeklong deworming exercise began last Saturday with over 18,000 people attended to in the last four days with ivermectin and abendazole administered to them.
According to Temitope, they have a target to reach 38,550 people on or before the 7days duration exercise winds up.
Among the beneficiaries of this UNICEF, SFH initiative are some practicing Journalists in the State, including Mr. Kayode Dimeji - Adedeji, a veteran Journalist and founder, PenPushing, an online news platform, who were at the Secretariat of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Okelewo, Abeokuta when the people visited the facility on Tuesday.
