No fewer than 60 women were discovered to have lumps in their breasts during the free breast and cervical screening exercise carried out in the month of October this year by the UPLIFT free Breast and Cervical Awareness and Screening programme of the First Lady of Ogun State, Nigeria, Mrs Olufunso Amosun.

The affected women would also  receive free surgery to extract the lumps by experts with  UPLIFT Development Foundation (UDF) picking the bills in conjunction with the State government in order  to reduce the scourge of cancer in the State.

The President of UDF, Mrs Amosun,  disclosed this on Thursday during the Lumpectomy Surgery programme at  the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital(OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State.

She said the planned free surgery for the 60 beneficiaries is  in fulfilment of the promise made by the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to foot the bills for the treatment.

“We thank God that UDF since the inception of cancer awareness and screening programme, there has been a tremendous reduction of maternal mortality because a lot of women now know their health status and those found with breast or cervical cancer can now receive free surgery and medication. Today 60 people would be operated at no cost to improve their health,” Mrs Amosun said.

Also, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, said  cancer is preventable and treatable if detected early, and  he advised women from forty years and above to ensure they get screened regularly for breast and cervical cancer.

According to Ipaye,  the State government would continue to provide qualitative health delivery for indigenes and residents of the State.
