A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state, on Monday gave an order for the remand of Professor Richard Akindele of the Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU), over allegation of demanding sex from his female student - Monica Osagie.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission( ICPC) arraigned the Akindele on a four count charges, bordering on unlawfully demanding sex from his student.
The accused is said to be a lecturer in the department of Management and Accounting of OAU.
The Commission alleged that by that action, the accused professor committed an offence contrary to Section A (1)(2) of the corrupt practices and other related offences.
“That you Professor Richard Iyiola Akindele on 16 September, 2018, did unlawfully solicit for sex from your student Monica Osagie, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 of the corrupt practices and other related offences, 2000."
According to the prosecution, the accused also unlawfully had conversation with Osagie on WhatsApp platform and thereby committed an offence contrary to the law.
The Professor, however, pleaded not guilty to the four count charges, even as his Counsel, Mr. F. Omotosho, asked the court to grant the accused bail, arguing that he is a known professor and won't jump bail.
But the prosecution, a Senior legal officer with the ICPC, Mr. Kehinde Adetoye, opposed the oral bail application, saying the accused has failed to appear at the commission after he was granted administrative bail.
“We have been making efforts since 5th of November to effect the service of the process. They have refused to come back and they were not reachable on mobile phone. We were surprised to see them here today. We just served them the process," Adetoye argued.
After looking at the argument of both counsel, Justice Maurine Onyetenu directed counsel to the accused to make a formal bail application for the Professor.
Onyetenu then adjourned the matter till November 27 for definite hearing, also gave an order to the effect that the accused be kept in prison custody.
